Cerro del Buitre

Cerro del Buitre

Scenic route with forests, meadows and spectacular views. Habitat of the griffon vulture. Access by car and hiking through unique and varied landscapes.

The route crosses forests and meadows inhabited by griffon vultures and crowns one of the highest peaks in the territory, the Pico del Buitre (2,020 m). The Collado del Laude can be reached by car and parked there. To do this, at km 4 of the A-326 road (Pozo Alcón - Huéscar) turn right onto the road to Los Madroñales. At the first crossroads turn left and at the next crossroads turn right. Shortly after passing the farmhouse of Los Quemados we reach the top of Collado del Laude. At the beginning we will find an interpretative panel and we will see the path that ascends through an area of sparse vegetation until we reach a thick pine forest. Walking along the course of the ravine, we will reach the Collado de Poyo Ramos with very striking rocks due to the erosion of the water. We continue ascending until we reach the high mountain meadows where we can find snow in winter. After passing the shepherds' refuge, we cross the meadows of El Buitre, where there are usually flocks of Segureño sheep. After rounding the hill on the right we can continue on to reach the summit with spectacular views of La Sagra, Castril and Sierra Seca. We can descend on the other side and reach the refuge again. Further down, we find a detour that allows us to reach the starting point through a rockier area.
