Ruta Tarifa-Creta
Sismites of Galera and Castilléjar
Discover unique folds formed by liquefaction, creating a landscape of shifting sand and viscous fluids, ideal for geology lovers.
Seismic waves transform the sediment into a kind of "quicksand". The water in the pores of the sediment is expelled, separating the grains and turning the material into a viscous fluid (liquefaction). When the upper sediment is denser (coarser) than the lower (finer) sediment, these folds known as sismites are produced.
